Album Reviews: Ali Azmat

Ali Azmat gained fame for being the singer and frontman of the ‘Sufi’ rock band, ‘Junoon’. Spawned from a nightmare, guitarist Salman Ahmad once had, the band was formed by him when he kidnapped a white man (Brian O’ Connell) from the States and invited Ali to join in. Salman, Brian and Ali would go on to bounce the ball of Pakistani pop music which was previously (initially) rolled by ‘Vital Signs’.

Bipasha Basu is great fan of Pakistani singer Atif Aslam

Mumbai, (IANS) Actress Bipasha Basu is a fan of Pakistani singer Atif Aslam and she wants him to do the playback for her movie “Race”.
Just back from Kolkata after shooting for her first Bengali film, “Sab Charitra Kalpunik” (All Characters Imaginary)” by Rituparno Ghosh, Bipasha almost swoons at the mention of her favourite singer.
“I am a diehard fan of Atif from the time he sang ‘Tere Bin’ and ‘Doori’. I wish he would sing for me some day. I listen to his albums in my car all the time and so when I heard about the track ‘Jaan-e-Jana’ in ‘Race’, I knew only Atif could do it,” she said.
Bipasha not only recommended Atif for the song but also urged the film’s producers to sign up her favourite singer. “And why not? Atif has a deal with Tips, which is producing ‘Race’. So this was my golden opportunity to get Atif into one of my films. And now ‘Jaan-e-Jana’ is my favourite song in ‘Race’.”
Talk about the crackling chemistry the actress shares with Saif Ali Khan in “Race”, Bipasha lights up. “It’s a slick sensuous thriller and I share good chemistry not only with Saif but also with Akshaye Khanna. I was working with both Saif and Akshaye for the first time. They’re good actors.”
“It’s been really hectic for me. We worked on Ritu’s film on a very tight schedule. I loved my role and the chance to speak in my mother tongue for the first time. I also shot in Santiniketan. It was something I really looked forward to. Unfortunately, I was there for just two days and it was raining all the time. I reached late in the night, shot the whole day and returned to Kolkata.”
Bipasha has a lot to look forward to in 2008. “Besides Ritu’s film, which gives me a completely new image, I have one more Bengali movie, Shudipto Chattopadhyay’s ‘Pankh’, lined up. It’s a very disturbing film about a child actor, who grows up thinking he’s a girl. I play his muse. I play myself. It’s a very different film. Then of course, there’s ‘Race’ with Abbas-Mustan.”
Bipasha started her career with Abbas-Mustan and hopes to work more with the duo. “In fact, I’ve an incomplete film ‘Mr Fraud’ with them. It is a full-on comedy with Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgan and Anuuj Sawhney. I’m ready to give dates whenever Sanju and Ajay find time. But they’re so busy, and so am I,” the actress said.

CLAY AIKEN RELEASES NEW RCA RECORDS ALBUM

(Los Angeles, CA - August, 3, 2006) The long wait for Clay Aiken fans is over. RCA Records will release the singer's third album, "A Thousand Different Ways" on September 19th. The project, Aiken's first outing since 2004, combines 10 cover versions of well-known songs from the '70s, '80s and '90s with four brand-new songs. The album is a follow-up to Aiken's debut set, "Measure of a Man," which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard album chart and is certified triple-platinum, as well as the platinum-selling "Merry Christmas with Love," the best-selling holiday album of the 2004 season. For Aiken, the new album's title has multiple meanings. "This is an album of love songs," he explains, "but they are about all different kinds of love. Romantic love, Friendship, Unconditional love. There are a thousand different kinds of love; a thousand different ways to tell someone you love them. And, on top of that, since so many of these songs are covers, it's realistic to say that many of them have been or could be sung a thousand different ways."In fact, Aiken has put his own spin on some of the well-known songs he has recorded for his new album. "These are songs I heard growing up. I loved them then and I still love them today, but we decided to do them a little differently. They have new arrangements and we put our own style on some of them."Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil's "Here You Come Again," a No. 3 hit for Dolly Parton in 1978, stands out for Aiken. "I've always loved that song," he says. "But for this album, we didn't use a country arrangement. It's a ballad version now. Adam Anders produced the most amazing arrangement and I couldn't wait to sing it."Aiken credits Chairman CEO BMG U.S., Clive Davis for coming up with the concept for the album. "When we first embarked on making an album, my executive producer Jaymes Foster and I started out with one or two covers, then we had three. We slowly discovered that it's harder these days to come by songs that are as superb as the songs that I grew up on. Based on that, it was Clive's brainchild that we take classic love songs of the last 30 years and pair them with four new songs. He is a man who not only knows music, but really has his finger on the pulse of what listeners want to hear."Those who have come to expect Aiken to belt out a song won't be disappointed. The album shows off Aiken's vocals in a big way with songs like the Bad English hit "When I See You Smile" and Harry Nillsson's "Without You." But Aiken will surprise fans by singing in a more relaxed style on some tracks than they have heard before, showing a different, sexier side.Aiken fans will also be glad to know he was personally involved with the selection of every track and that he participated in every aspect of the album. "For the first album, most of the songs were chosen ahead of time. I was less of a participant in the process. The second album was a Christmas album, so we naturally chose songs of the season. This new album has much more of me in it. Right from the beginning, Clive and Jaymes wanted to find songs that were right for me. Jaymes told me, "Stay in your lane, but remember it's okay to swerve a little and see where it takes you.' That's exactly what we did."

Enter Music Publishing, publishers of hip drum magazines worldwide, is experiencing a tremendous response rate to its "Email Neil Editorial Campaign." Officially launched on February 11, the Neil Peart population has sent questions via neilpeart@drumlink.com. Additionally, questions have been sent online or by accessing the Questions page on DRUM!'s YouTube site. The result: 1,000 emails from across the globe.
The emailed questions have varied from the most basic to the highly complex in regard to Peart's drumming approach. During an initial audit, many questions posed to Peart focused on how his influences have been as well as more technical, such as how he developed such a diverse left hand approach.
"We were very intrigued by the initial results," said Phil Hood, publisher and one of the founders of DRUM! Magazine. "Neil is just one of those drummers appreciated by drummers of all ages and walks of life so we anticipate a really diverse and cool story". As previously announced, Andy Doerschuk, editor and another founder of DRUM!, will take the questions and create and integrated editorial cover story.
He's already beginning to get nervous regarding deadline. And, on that note, all emails have to be received by DRUM! Magazine by March 15. Stay tuned, we'll keep you informed on the Email Neil Editorial Campaign as it rolls out.

Record label says no new album from Shania Twain coming soon

Although several sources revealed on Wednesday, Jan. 21, that Shania Twain will make an announcement about a new album during the latter part of the week of Jan. 26, a spokesperson from her record label, Mercury Nashville, contacted Country Weekly magazine late on Thursday, Jan. 22, to say that there would be no announcement of new Shania music any time soon. Obviously, Shania's legion of fans—and the Country Weekly staff—are still hopeful that it won't be too long before she releases a new CD. But, for now, we will all have to wait for the label's announcement.
Shania recently remarked that she has been busy writing songs for a new record. "That's consuming a lot of my time right now," she noted. Shania added that she was working especially hard on lyrics, because "I want to be as true to myself as possible." This past year, Shania split from her husband and producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange after 14 years of marriage. Her Come on Over CD is the best-selling album in country history with sales of more than 20 million copies in the U.S. and more than double that amount worldwide.
